UMAM Holds Grand Orientation for Hundreds of Doctoral Candidates from 10 Countries
PADANG BESAR, PERLIS – Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM) hosted a remarkable Ph.D. orientation program on Tuesday (October 21, 2025), marking one of the largest and most international academic gatherings in its history. The event celebrated Muhammadiyah’s ongoing success in internationalization, welcoming hundreds of doctoral candidates from ten countries — including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Tanzania, Bangladesh, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Comoros, Cambodia, and one additional nation. The grandeur of the event was further elevated by the presence of several university rectors from across Southeast Asia and representatives from official Malaysian institutions.
The UMAM Multipurpose Hall was filled with a vibrant international atmosphere as UMAM Rector Dr. Saidul Amin officially inaugurated the orientation program for the university’s fourth Ph.D. cohort. In his inspiring address, Dr. Amin emphasized that the presence of doctoral candidates from ten diverse nations reflects Muhammadiyah’s vision of universal humanity and inclusivity.
“The diversity we witness today not only enriches academic discourse but also affirms that Muhammadiyah’s educational values have been embraced globally,” he stated.
Reinforcing its commitment to global academic collaboration, UMAM invited several university leaders from neighboring countries as keynote speakers. Their participation provided valuable insights into regional research trends and higher education developments in Southeast Asia — a testament to the international recognition of Muhammadiyah’s academic excellence. This synergy is expected to broaden the intellectual perspectives and research capacities of the incoming doctoral students.
Recognizing the challenges faced by international students, UMAM also partnered with various Malaysian government agencies to deliver practical guidance on immigration procedures, cultural adaptation, access to public services, and tips for building academic and professional networks. This holistic approach reflects Muhammadiyah’s dedication to creating a supportive and inclusive educational ecosystem for all learners.
Beyond the grandeur of the event, the week-long orientation program remains deeply rooted in academic preparation and value formation. The doctoral candidates will receive comprehensive introductions to UMAM’s academic system, research and publication standards, as well as the foundational principles of Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan.
Through this visionary and inclusive orientation, UMAM continues to strengthen its role in the global higher education landscape — proving that Muhammadiyah has evolved into an internationally recognized institution, committed to advancing knowledge, faith, and humanity across borders.
