Perlis, Malaysia, students from Postgraduate Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta gained international experience as a result of  collaboration with Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia by holding an international conference (Joint International Conference) with the theme “The Dynamics of Muslim Life in Southeast Asia: Text, Discursive Practices and Halal Lifestyle”. The international conference was held at the Hotel Seri Malaysia, Kangar, Perlis on December 6th, 2022.

The session was marked by the second Keynote Speaker, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sohirin Muhammad Solihin who previously conducted a meeting with the representative from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Head of Programme PhD in Islamic Studies delivered his presentation entitled “The Impact of Halal Governance on Human Life: Contemporary Textual Analysis”. The delivered presentation shows that UMAM offers PhD in Islamic Studies.

The conference program began with remarks by the Rector of UMAM, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Waluyo Adi Siswanto, and continued with the Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Dr. Ahmad Muttaqin. Furthermore, the first panel session was opened by Dr. Wachid Ridwan, Vice Rector of UMAM, as moderator for the panel discussion. In this first panel session, Dr. Nina Mariani Noor, M.A., Chair of the Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Postgraduate Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga became the first Keynote Speaker by presenting the results of her research entitled “Preserving Humanity and Maintaining Sanity during Pandemic Covid-19: The Experience of Srikandi Lintas Iman Yogyakarta”.

The second panel session of the conference was filled with students of the Masters and Doctoral Postgraduate programs at UIN Sunan Kalijaga to present their research results. Arisy Abror Dzukroni delivered a research presentation entitled, “State, Ulama, and Halal Issue: Majlis Ulama Indonesia after Halal Mandatory Policy”, and Muhammad Faizur Rohman presented his research on halal influencers with the title, “The Halal Influencers: Aspirations of Halal Consumption of the Indonesian Muslims Middle-Class”, both of whom are students of the Masters Program Concentrating on Halal Industry and Business Studies.

Three students from the Doctoral Program in Islamic Studies also presented in the joint international conference. Abu Sufyan presented the results of his research on “Traditional Islam, Interpretation, and Islamic Boarding School Identity: Contribution of Jami’ al-Bayan by Muhammad bin Sulaiman on Islamic Boarding Schools in Contemporary Java”. Alfi Kamaliah explained his research, “Mi’raj as (non) Interreligious Marriage in Indonesia: Authority Contest and Legitimacy”. Whereas Ikhwanul Fuad Ahsan presented “Debate on Interreligious Marriage in Indonesia: Authority Contest and Legitimacy”. After the second session, the event then continued with the submission of input and suggestions to improve the results of student research by Dr. Wachid Ridwan as the moderator, then the conference was closed with group photos.
