IPU remarked Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM) is a campus which offers an international environment to the prospective PhD students in a socialization event at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bandung (UM Bandung) on November 24th, 2022.
Rector of UM Bandung encouraged lecturers from Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah dan ‘Aisyiyah (PTMA) to complete their PhD studies at UMAM for those who have yet to take Doctor of Philosophy or Strata 3. Completing PhD matters according to the Head of UM Bandung as it is the basis of academia and to develop PTMAs across Indonesia towards internationalization.
Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Waluyo Adi Siswanto, accompanied by Vice Rector, Dr. Wachid Ridwan and Head of Programme PhD in Business and Management Dr. Rai Rake Setyawan pointed out the need of increasing PhD lecturers in Indonesia in order to be more competitive in the era of global education. Pangkalan Data Pendidikan Tinggi (PDDikti) says only about 30% of lecturers in Indonesia (42,825 lecturers) hold PhD or Strata 3.
UMAM currently offers five research-based PhD programmes; (1) PhD in Islamic Studies, (2) PhD in Social Science, (3) PhD in Education, (4) PhD in Information Technology, and (5) PhD in Business and Management, in which the students can complete their PhD journey by only 3 years. Ir. Herry Suhardiyanto delighted with the similarity programmes in UM Bandung and the 3-years PhD course at UMAM through online progress report on every end of semester, hence many of the lecturers from his institution can further and complete their PhD at UMAM on time.
UMAM also offers existing PhD lecturers at UM Bandung an opportunity to become co-supervisor or in Indonesia named as co-promotor. The offer is to allow lecturers to engage with experts from multiple countries on research publications. UM Bandung will get the benefit in any publications while they collaborate with UMAM and to receive a title of visiting lecturer or professor. The initiative eventually will help them to be promoted in their home affiliation.
MoU was signed at the end of socialization program held at UM Bandung in the morning session with participants from Universitas ‘Aisyiyah (UNISA) Bandung and Universitas Islam Bandung (UNISBA) also attended the program. Prof. Dr. Ir. Herry Suhardiyanto welcomed UMAM with open hand as both institutions have the same interest to improve the education in Indonesia.
The signing is hoped to extend more international collaboration between the two parties on exchange programs, research publications and joint PhD programmes. Such international collaboration between UM Bandung and UMAM at the present could progress the education in Indonesia corresponding to the trend of internalization in education.
