Surabaya, Indonesia: The Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM) looks forward to have co-promotor from Indonesia. The intention was clearly said by the representatives of UMAM who attended a program ‘Sosialisasi Studi Lanjut Program Doktoral di Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia’ which was held at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UMSurabaya) recently on Wednesday, October 5th, 2022 and participated by Muhammadiyah universities across East Java region.
Rector of UMAM, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Waluyo Adi Siswanto on Wednesday spoke to all participants of five PhD programmes offered at UMAM, a move that Dr. Waluyo said it would have never been done before. Increasing more opportunities is a dream come true for lecturers in Indonesia to study at Malaysia, says one of the UMSurabaya lecturers, Sulton Dedi Wijaya, S.Pd., M.Pd.
The move to acquire all PhD programmes as a starter of the university, targets PhD students candidates, as well as co-promotor, or in Malaysia known as co-supervisor. In fact, participants mostly are interested in becoming a co-supervisor at UMAM as some of them who attended the session already have PhD.
That says a new type of promotion as a university, where normally they only look for student, says Vice Rector III of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo, Eko Hardiansyah, M.Psi., Psikolog. The promotion of co-supervisor is being made to open more opportunities for lecturers in Indonesia who already have PhD or S3 to have PhD students. When they are now being asked whether they have students or not, they say yes, but students of undergraduate and postgraduates, says Rector of UMAM.
The potential co-supervisor can either look for students from their own campus, or within Muhammadiyah & Aisyiyah, or public universities in Indonesia. That is up to the relations and connections that the lecturer has, as long as the prospective students accept the invitation, says Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik, Nadhirotul Laily, S.Psi., M.Psi., one of the participants of the event.
UMAM will also ensure the qualification of the potential co-supervisor, and that is the benefit when engaging with UMAM. The Rector of UMAM, Dr. Waluyo Adi in his speech informed that the ‘Forum PhD Research Supervision Workshop’ session at UMAM is compulsory to all lecturers who apply as co-promotor at UMAM
This will make sure the co-promotor will acquire enough competency in supervising PhD students by research, extending the human resources of existing Indonesian lecturers at the same time. There is no requirement for those who have a certificate showing they already have past experiences in supervising PhD research students, but the university will not repel if they want to attend the workshop, the Rector of UMAM said.
None of UMAM’s mission contradicts the commitment of Muhammadiyah as a whole, in enhancing human resources within the Muhammadiyah campuses as soon as possible among the lecturers. The commitment shown from UMSurabaya by sending some of their lecturers to UMAM in furthering their doctoral study, said Vice Rector III of UMSurabaya, Ma’ruf Sya’ban, ST., SE., M.Ak., during his welcoming speech.
Vice Rector I of Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo, Bambang Harmanto, S.Pd., M.Pd., glad with the system introduced by UMAM where existing lecturers can further study but at the same time also lecture as usual at their existing campus, said Vice Rector I of UM Ponorogo during his interview session after signing an MoU with UMAM. With the existing system as mentioned, Muhammadiyah in future will have more PhD level lecturers, says Dr. Hanafi, M.Pd., the Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember.
