UMRI and UMAM Host Joint Baitul Arqom to Strengthen Islamic Values and Professionalism

Kuala Lumpur – Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau (UMRI) and Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM) successfully organized a three-day Baitul Arqom program aimed at enhancing Islamic values and professionalism among staff from UMRI’s Medicine and Pharmacy programs as well as UMAM’s academic personnel.

Held from Wednesday to Friday (November 27–29, 2024) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the program focused on instilling Muhammadiyah's Islamic principles and fostering professional excellence among participants.

Strengthening Islamic Morals in Education

The event was officially opened by the Chairman of Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership (PWM) Riau, Dr. Hendri Sayuti, M.Ag., who emphasized the importance of Baitul Arqom as a means of implementing Muhammadiyah's values in education.

Baitul Arqom serves as a platform to reinforce Islamic morals and motivate educators and staff to contribute to the development of knowledge rooted in Islamic values,” said Dr. Hendri in his opening speech.

The program was attended by UMRI and UMAM Rector, Dr. Saidul Amin, M.A., who applauded the cross-border collaboration between the two Muhammadiyah institutions in organizing this meaningful event.

“This program exemplifies the strengthening of synergy between Muhammadiyah institutions not only in Indonesia but also on an international scale. We hope Baitul Arqom becomes a platform for shaping academic professionals with integrity and competence,” said Dr. Saidul Amin.

Insights into Muhammadiyah’s Educational Vision

A keynote session was delivered by Prof. Ahmad Mutaqin, Ph.D., Secretary of the Council for Higher Education, Research, and Development (Diktilitbang) of Muhammadiyah Central Leadership. He shared strategies for developing Muhammadiyah’s higher education institutions in the face of global challenges.

“Muhammadiyah education must address contemporary challenges while staying grounded in Islamic values and contributing meaningfully to societal development,” he emphasized.

Support from Philanthropy

A notable highlight of the event was the presence of philanthropist Dato’ Zuraida, who has generously donated an office building in Kuala Lumpur for UMAM’s representation in Malaysia. She expressed her hopes for the endowment to strengthen Muhammadiyah’s outreach and education initiatives in the region.

“I hope this endowment serves as a strong foundation for expanding Muhammadiyah’s mission in Malaysia and strengthening its international education network,” she remarked.

Activities and Outcomes

The program featured various activities, including lectures, group discussions, and workshops focused on personal and professional development. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their roles as educators and academic staff in nurturing a generation with strong Islamic character.

Through this program, UMRI and UMAM aim to further solidify their partnership while fostering a robust synergy to build education rooted in Islamic values at an international level.
