Supervision Course

UMAM Campus Background

Supervision Course

The Postgraduate Supervision Course at UMAM is a comprehensive program designed to equip research supervisors and postgraduate students with advanced methodologies, ethical frameworks, and collaboration strategies for successful thesis completion.

Course Objectives

This course aims to establish a shared understanding of roles, responsibilities, and standards in research supervision, ensuring that postgraduate candidates receive high-quality guidance throughout their academic journey.

  • Align supervisor-student expectations and establish communication guidelines.
  • Provide tools for monitoring progress and overcoming research bottlenecks.
  • Introduce institutional standards, thesis templates, and submission workflows.
  • Enhance mentoring skills, academic writing, and publication support.

Structuring the Supervision Process

A structured supervision framework increases the likelihood of on-time completion. Supervisors and candidates are encouraged to hold formal bi-weekly progress meetings, document action items, and submit quarterly reports.

Key Timeline Milestones

  1. Research Proposal Defense: Typically conducted within the first 6–9 months of registration.
  2. Work in Progress (WIP) Seminar: Annual presentation to share tentative findings.
  3. Thesis Pre-Submission: Internal review 3 months prior to final submission.
  4. Viva Voce (Oral Examination): Final defense before the panel of examiners.

Supervisor Allocation & Registration

Students are matched with supervisors based on research interests and expertise compatibility. You can submit supervisor preferences through the student portal, along with your initial research abstract.
